Protest Against Killing

Kashmiri Muslim villagers set a police vehicle on fire during a violent protest in Magam some 25 Kilometers (15 miles) north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, 15 December 2007. Police fired at thousands of protesters who turned violent during a demonstration demanding a college in their town in the Indian part of Kashmir on 15 December 2007, killing one person and wounding at least five others, police said.

Dozens of separatists made an abortive bid to reach a small United Nations office in Indian Kashmir but police barricaded them and detained dozens. Since the 1990s, the disputed Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has been hit by confrontation between armed separatists and the Indian army, which has left more than 42,000 people dead by official count. Human rights groups put the death toll at 60,000, with another 10,000 missing.
